About
About.
Mira Knoche (b. 1984 in Germany) is an Edinburgh-based, interdisciplinary figurative artist, living in Scotland since 2007. Her work focuses on visual storytelling, intercultural feminist vision-making and community building, in dialogue with traditional techniques. Next to painting, photography and sculpture, her practice includes writing, collaborations, directing and performance.
She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art (BFA in Painting & Printmaking) and studied at the New York Academy of Art (MFA in Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking programme) as a Fulbright scholar in 2024-25.
Her practice explores embodied storytelling, power patterns, class, gender and community. She investigates relationships between ancient and contemporary material processes and stories, female gazes onto the world, through abstract and figurative art.
Her research focuses around reinventing mythologies, reconsidering canonical art and popular imagery from an intersectional perspective, sometimes delving into the grotesque. She aims to both revive archetypal, culturally ingrained imagery as well as obliquely shift and question inherent representations of perceived realities, such as gender norms and class/culture prejudices; for example, in her series ‘Sisyphus as Woman’ (2021). In 2022 she participated in a scholarship-funded residency at the New York Academy of Art and later returned for the MFA programme in 2024-25.
Invested in multi-media collaborations, Mira managed a punk band for a while, and in 2019 founded womxn-led WENCH collective to programme ad hoc women-led art & music events. She co-curated several group exhibitions as part of Naked Aye Art collective. She has written on art for Bella Caledonia.
EXHIBITIONS:
In 2019 she had a solo exhibition at Edinburgh Central Art & Design Library, with her second solo show ‘Bleeding Gold’ on at Whitespace Gallery, Edinburgh (2024). ‘Wanderlust’ is her third solo exhibition, with analogue photography and art made in New York, on at Gallery 2, Scot-Art, Edinburgh (June 2026).
Mira Knoche’s work has been included in numerous group shows: At Salt Space Gallery in Glasgow (2020, 2021, 2022, 2025), Pier Arts Centre (2022), The Life Room (Edinburgh, 2022), the New York Academy of Art (2022 and 2024), ‘An Overwhelming Minority – The Art of Solidarity’ with Akasha Collective, Yonkers, New York (March 2025), and Tribeca Ball (Manhattan, New York, April 2025).
She currently has a project space at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.
